The Politics of Gender Dysphoria

transumbrella

It’s come down to this …. the bathroom wars in America. Judging by the acrimonious legislative battle in Austin these past months, Texas is in the crosshairs of the second generation sexual revolutionaries looking to score another victory for freedom and diversity by recreating and redefining the nature of human beings. After all this is the 21st century, according to the progressives. “Get with it, people!” In the last one, contraception and abortion laws fell, homosexual attraction was erased as a pathological disorder from 1973 on as decided by some members of the American Psychiatric Association, the same year seven black-robed men on the High Court voted to open the floodgates to legalized abortion. Marriage was redefined in 2015 by five black-robed men and women on the High Court by the slimmest of margins, 5-4 in the Obergefell v Hodges case, which opened the floodgates again this time to marriages between same sex couples, and then the homosexual community rested for awhile to admire their new creation, rejecting the gift of the Creator who made man and woman in His image,  imago Dei, giving themselves up to passiones ignominiae, “dishonorable passions”. They cheered and rejoiced.

But they didn’t rest long. Progressives keep marching on to ever new battles in the search for Utopia and total personal autonomy. Now their allies, the “T”s in LGBT wanted a piece of the action. Traditional Christian morality was continuing to lose ground and they were going to finally conquer… liberte, egalite, fraternite. The Obama years gave them a sympathetic executive in the White House, liberal academics in universities, activist federal judges produced by those same schools, and acquiescent comrades in the mainstream Media.

So while Texas has not yet seceded from the Union, the federal system continues to  tether the state to its morally crumbling tugboat, pulling us along in a direction we don’t want to go. Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday the unruly state legislators will be back for a 30 day special summer session starting July 18th to finish the people’s business that did not get done in the 140 day 85th session, thanks for the most part to House Speaker Joe Straus and his progressive (liberal) Republican and Democrat surrogates and allies.

One of the priorities of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is to enact legislation “addressing individuals’ use of bathrooms, showers and locker rooms that correspond with their biologically determined sex”. Senate Bill 6,  entitled the Texas Privacy Act, filed by  Sen. Lois Kolkhorst, R- Brenham,  was approved by the full Senate on March 14th. SB6 intends to “increase privacy and protections in bathrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms.” The bill preempts  counties or municipalities from adopting or enforcing an ordinance that would establish a policy whereby  a person could use public  facilities (including schools) which did not conform to their biological sex. While the bill passed handily in the Senate, it quickly stalled in the House and there it languished and died until the end of the general session thanks To House Speaker Joe Straus and State Affairs Committee Chair, Byron Cook.

Let’s be clear. The issue surrounding the battle of the Texas bathrooms is much bigger than the obsessive whining and sophomoric arguments of the those who support the desires of those afflicted with gender dysphoria to enter the bathroom of their choice. It’s much more than the arguments about the safety of women and children, granted safety and privacy are real issues we should be concerned about. It is all about the dominance of secular humanism over our nation and removing the “under God” after one nation in our pledge of allegiance.

Definition of Gender Dysphoria

“Gender dysphoria involves a conflict between a person’s physical or assigned gender and the gender with which he/she/they identify. People with gender dysphoria may be very uncomfortable with the gender they were assigned, sometimes described as being uncomfortable with their body (particularly developments during puberty) or being uncomfortable with the expected roles of their assigned gender.” (What is Gender Dysphoria, American Psychiatric Association)

We all must open our eyes to what is really going on in the popular culture regarding the battle of the bathrooms. It’s not just about bathrooms. It is more about a national activist movement  made up of sexual libertines and their allies in the media and universities working to forever change our culture as founded upon Judeo-Christian moral principles. Attempting to convince everyone that  the bathroom issue  is a civil rights issue and that it is discriminatory to bar men and boys who believe they are girls in male bodies or girls who believe they are males trapped in female bodies from entering the bathroom of their choice is a means to an end. The end game is to change traditional practices in legal contracts, employment and labor laws, expand medical coverage for sex change (reassignment) surgery, etc.  The societal upheaval in identifying as victims another protected class considered worthy of special rights does not only have moral consequences but economic as well  especially when we as a society are going about exacerbating the problem by not thinking clearly and rationally which may result in causing irreparable harm to the so-called victims.

What is wrong with the transgender and overall LGBT’s aggressive agenda? Let us count the ways.

In 2007  Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into California law, SB 777, prohibiting teaching or activity that “reflects adversely upon” or “promotes a discriminatory bias” because of sexual orientation or gender identity. In 2015 California became the first state to fund sex reassignment surgery for transgender prison inmates. You may recall the garden state is nearly broke.

In 2011, the Internal Revenue Service approved itemized medical deductions for surgery and hormones for people with gender identity disorders.

Last year the Obama Department of Health and Human Services issued a regulation enforcing Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act pressuring health insurers to cover sex change operations which could then be subsidized by taxpayers through Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare. (FoxNews, 5/16/2016)

The same day the Obama administration ordered public schools to allow students to use whatever bathroom or locker room matches “their chosen gender identity” or risk losing Title IX federal funding. One way to bring about this “equality” and  “accommodation” is to increase school spending to change existing or build new bathrooms and locker rooms to accommodate persons with gender dysphoria.

The impact on sports is substantial with the Olympics taking the lead. The International Olympic Committee last year ruled that the “so-called male-to-female transgender athletes already allowed in the Olympics since 2012 after castration and two years of hormone therapy would be allowed in the Rio Olympics without surgery as long as their testosterone has been below male levels for a year.”

What about the corruption of the scientific community? In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the APA’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) after repeated long term pressure from homosexual activists. Only about half of the members agreed to the change.

Transgenderism was then removed from the APA’s DSM-5 in 2013 but be forewarned you may have a serious disorder which was added to the DSM-5 for which I confess guilt. If you are a hoarder, according to the APA, you are mentally ill. Hoarding is a new mental disorder. I guess the APA shrinks would consider candidates for straight jackets all those survivalists in the Sierras and Rocky Mountains with stores of  supplies waiting for Armageddon.

There are camps targeting children identified as transgender and gender-variant. Camp Aranu’Tiq in New Hampshire and California  admit children as young as 8 years old. The sessions run from one to three weeks long. These camps are meant not to offer guidance and counseling to children experiencing gender confusion feelings but to affirm them. Walter Heyer’s story as a “transgender kid” who underwent sex reassignment surgery and regretted his decision is a powerful story for parents to learn about the dangers of embracing the agenda of the gender identity movement.

Where do we go from here?

As conservative Christians, we must affirm in all sectors of society the immutable truth about the nature of man, rooted in the creative design of the Almighty God. “God does not make mistakes. He does not make junk”, a priest once said to our congregation.  “Scripture teaches that humans are made in God’s image as male and female, and that there’s a complementarity of the sexes that uniquely brings forth new life and – mysteriously – reflects who God is (Gen. 1:27).” I highly recommend the excellent resources on the Transgenderism Series provided by Focus on the Family.

Honest scientists must continue to carry out their work with those who are unhappy with their homosexual orientation and experience difficulties with gender dysphoria. According to Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, co-founder of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, studies show that therapy “participants reported large and statistically significant reductions in the frequency of their homosexual thoughts and fantasies that they attributed to conversion therapy or self-help. They also reported large improvements in their psychological, interpersonal, and spiritual well-being.” But there are 27 cities and states combined that have banned conversion therapy for minors who are conflicted with same sex attraction or gender identity disorders.

The Catholic Church has spoken clearly about the issue of gender dysphoria warning against government coercion. The U.S. bishops have quoted Pope Francis’ writings and public statements in 2016 where he said that  ” the young need to be helped to accept their own body as it was created (Amoris Laetitia). Children, youth, and parents in these difficult situations deserve compassion, sensitivity, and respect. All of these can be expressed without infringing on legitimate concerns about privacy and security on the part of the other young students and parents.”

Pope Benedict XVI spoke out about this serious issue of gender identity politics a few months before he stepped down declaring  “[t]he profound falsehood of this theory and of the  anthropological revolution contained within it is obvious. Gender is a gift. It is also a given. The dangers of the Gender  Identity Movement are becoming increasingly clear.”

Dr. Paul R. McHugh, former John Hopkins University Chief of Psychiatry, wrote in a Wall Street Journal commentary that he “witnessed a great deal of damage from sex reassignment… those who enable the mental illness of transgenderism are “collaborating with madness.” He shared findings from a recent study showing that the suicide rate among the transgender who had reassignment surgery is twenty times higher than the suicide rate among non-transgender persons. Furthermore studies by Vanderbilt University and London’s Portman Clinic showed that 70%-80% of the children who had expressed transgender feelings over time “spontaneously lost those feelings.”

Finally,  the National Catholic Bioethics Center published a very good statement on transgenderism. Readers are encouraged to read the whole statement especially the ramifications and implications on human anthropology, ethics, health care, and educational institutions of accepting the erroneous positions of the “gender identity movement” .

To briefly summarize:

“The notion of being able to change one’s sex, most radically through surgical intervention, has increasingly become a part of public awareness and social discourse. The boldness of the gender ideology movement has now brought it to the forefront. Resolutions and policies of medical associations and legislative and regulatory actions promote so-called gender affirmation and gender transitioning, even in prepubescent children, and mandate the compliance of schools, health care providers, health care payers, social services, and others. Such regulations are coercive and based on a false understanding of human identity. Gender transitioning insists on affirming a false identity and, in many cases, mutilation of the body in support of that falsehood.”

[This article is dedicated to Dr.  Joseph Nicolosi, Ph.D,  who passed away on March 8, 2017. Dr. Joe was always civil and charitable to his adversaries as I learned when he spoke at our conference in San Francisco on the pastoral care of homosexuals. His courage, perseverance, and optimism were an inspiration to all of his patients and colleagues who work in this very difficult field and his long battle to help his clients with honesty and exceptional scientific integrity will be remembered by many.
